How to Tell Dog Diarrhea From Colitis: Stool Signs, Timing and Which Fibre Sources and Foods Help

Classic small-intestinal diarrhea means large volumes of watery stool passed two or three times a day, often with gas and weight loss. Colitis — inflammation of the large intestine — looks different: small, frequent, urgent stools with straining, jelly-like mucus, and sometimes streaks of fresh red blood. Frequency, volume, mucus and blood colour are your clearest clues.

Neither pattern is something you diagnose from a blog post, and both deserve a veterinary conversation. What you can do is describe the stool accurately and adjust the diet your vet approves. Soluble fibre is the nutritional lever that matters most for large-bowel signs, and it shows up in both supplements and finished diets — you'll find fibre-supported options throughout our dry dog food selection and our wet dog food range.

What the standards say about fibre, stool and complete diets

AAFCO sets minimums for protein content and fat content but publishes no minimum or maximum for crude fibre in dog food, which is why "high-fibre" formulas vary so widely. Per the AAFCO Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles, adult maintenance requires at least 18% crude protein and 5.5% crude fat on a dry-matter basis, rising to 22.5% protein for growth and reproduction. Fibre is left to the manufacturer's judgement.

That gap explains the numbers you see on a guaranteed analysis panel. Most maintenance kibbles land between 2% and 5% crude fibre. Digestive-support and weight-control formulas commonly run 6% to 12%, and a few therapeutic diets exceed 15%. Crude fibre on the label also under-reports soluble fibre — the fermentable fraction that gels, slows transit and feeds colonic bacteria — so two foods listing 4% fibre can behave very differently in a dog's colon.

The evidence for soluble fibre in large-bowel disease is specific. A Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine study of 37 dogs with chronic idiopathic large-bowel diarrhea found that roughly 80% responded to psyllium added to their existing diet, with many maintaining normal stool long-term. Later work indexed on NCBI/PubMed has reinforced that fermentable fibres and prebiotics such as beet pulp, inulin and fructooligosaccharides support short-chain fatty acid production in the colon, which the colonic lining uses as fuel.

On timing, the AVMA and the CVMA both advise veterinary attention when diarrhea persists beyond 24 to 48 hours, or immediately if there's blood, repeated vomiting, lethargy, a distended abdomen, or if the dog is a puppy, senior, or has a chronic condition. AAFCO refreshes its Official Publication every year, and the 2026 edition still contains no fibre requirement — so label reading, not label trust, is your job.

What we see in the store when owners describe loose stool

The single most useful question we ask is "how many times a day, and how much each time?" Owners who say "he's going eight times and only producing a tablespoon, and there's slime on it" are describing large-bowel signs. Owners who say "she blew out a huge puddle twice overnight" are describing small-bowel signs. Same word — diarrhea — two very different conversations.

Our team at Ashario Pets keeps a printed fecal scoring chart (the standard 1-to-7 scale, where 2 is ideal and 6-7 is liquid) near the food wall because photos and adjectives get fuzzy fast. Pet owners tell us the chart makes their vet appointment shorter and more productive. In our store we see a seasonal spike every spring, when the thaw turns Downsview Park's off-leash trails into a buffet of meltwater puddles and last autumn's mystery finds; stress colitis after boarding is the other big cluster, usually in March and December.

When a customer comes in asking what to feed a dog that just finished a colitis flare, our nutrition experts at the North York store typically suggest three things in order: confirm the plan with the veterinarian, keep the protein source consistent rather than switching brands mid-recovery, and add soluble fibre gradually over five to seven days. Customers love that last part because it costs almost nothing to try — a canister of psyllium or a tin of plain pumpkin is far cheaper than a full bag swap that may not stick.

We also watch for the trap of over-supplementing. We tested our own recommendation ranges against feedback logs and found that owners who jumped straight to a full tablespoon of psyllium for a 12 kg dog frequently reported gas and firmer-than-ideal stool within two days. Start low. Titrate up.

Common questions about diarrhea, colitis and fibre

What does colitis mucus in dog stool look like?

Colitis mucus looks like clear, cloudy or yellowish jelly coating the outside of the stool, sometimes passed on its own as a slick blob with no formed stool at all. It comes from goblet cells in the colon producing excess mucin when the lining is irritated. Fresh red blood streaks often accompany it.

The colour of blood matters. Bright red blood on the surface (hematochezia) points to the lower bowel, while black, tarry stool (melena) suggests digested blood from higher in the tract and warrants a prompt veterinary visit. Straining after the stool is out — tenesmus — is another hallmark of large-bowel involvement, and owners often mistake it for constipation. If your dog squats repeatedly and produces nothing but mucus, that's an urgency signal, not a blockage diagnosis.

How much soluble fibre or psyllium should I add to my dog's food?

Commonly cited veterinary ranges for unflavoured psyllium husk are roughly 1/2 teaspoon per 10 kg of body weight once or twice daily, mixed into moist food with extra water — so about 1/2 teaspoon for a 10 kg beagle and 1 to 2 teaspoons for a 30 kg lab. Confirm the amount with your veterinarian before starting.

Psyllium absorbs many times its weight in water, so it must go into wet food or be mixed with 60 to 120 mL of added water; dry-dosing risks a doughy mass and gagging. Plain canned pumpkin is the gentler alternative at roughly 1 teaspoon per 5 kg daily (about 3 kcal per teaspoon), though its soluble fibre density is far lower than psyllium's, so large dogs may need several tablespoons to see any effect. Give any fibre trial five to seven days before judging it, and stop if gas, bloating or firmer-than-normal stool appears.

How long is too long for dog diarrhea before I call the vet?

Call within 24 hours if your dog is a puppy under six months, a senior, under 5 kg, or has any chronic illness. For a healthy adult dog with normal energy and appetite, 24 to 48 hours of mild loose stool is a reasonable watch window. Blood, vomiting, or lethargy means call now.

Dehydration is the real risk with high-volume small-bowel diarrhea. A dog losing 200 to 400 mL of fluid per stool several times a day can drop meaningful body weight in 48 hours. Check gum moisture and skin elasticity, keep fresh water available at all times, and note the timing, frequency and appearance of every stool — your vet will ask. The ASPCA also maintains a useful list of household and garden toxins worth ruling out if the onset was sudden.

What is the best food for a dog with colitis in Canada?

There's no single best food. The formulas that work most consistently for large-bowel signs share four traits: a single or limited ingredient protein source, moderate fat content (12% to 16% dry matter), added soluble and fermentable fibre such as beet pulp or psyllium, and guaranteed probiotics or prebiotics. Your veterinarian may prescribe a therapeutic diet instead.

Among over-the-counter options carried in Ontario, limited-ingredient lines from Zignature, Go! Solutions Sensitivities, Open Farm and SquarePet are frequent starting points, and Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin and Royal Canin Digestive Care are the two most-requested sensitive-stomach kibbles we stock. If your dog does better on higher moisture, a gently cooked or wet diet raises total water intake meaningfully — browse our dog health and wellness supplements alongside the food to cover probiotics and omega-3 support.

How to choose between two sensitive-stomach formulas

The practical decision for most owners comes down to a moderate-fat, added-fibre kibble versus a limited-ingredient formula that removes suspect proteins. Both approaches are legitimate; the right one depends on whether your dog's flares track with dietary indiscretion or with a specific ingredient.

Feature Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin Zignature Limited Ingredient
Best for Dogs with recurring loose stool and no confirmed food sensitivity Dogs whose flares follow a suspected protein trigger such as chicken or beef
Protein source Chicken-based, prebiotic fibre blend, added omega-6 and vitamin E for skin Single novel proteins (lamb, kangaroo, whitefish, turkey) with no chicken, egg or dairy
Fibre approach Beet pulp plus prebiotic fibre; typical crude fibre around 3-5% Lower added fibre; relies on ingredient simplification rather than bulk
Typical energy density Roughly 350-380 kcal per cup Roughly 360-400 kcal per cup
Price tier $$ $$$

Transition either food over seven to ten days — 25% new food for three days, then 50%, then 75% — because an abrupt switch during recovery is one of the most common causes of a second flare. Keep treats consistent with the new protein: a lamb-based diet undone by chicken jerky teaches you nothing. Our single-ingredient freeze-dried options in the dog treats collection make that easier, and Crumps' Naturals and Caru are the two lines we point owners toward when they need something plain.

Track results the way a clinician would: record stool score, frequency and any mucus daily for two weeks. If large-bowel signs persist past a fortnight on a consistent diet with soluble fibre added, ask about fecal testing, dietary trial protocols, or imaging. Chronic colitis can involve parasites such as whipworm, stress-responsive inflammation, or inflammatory bowel disease — and none of those are solved by pumpkin. For more diet-and-digestion reading, our dog blog and our guide to food for specific needs go deeper on protein rotation and life-stage formulation.

At a glance: Small-bowel diarrhea is high-volume and infrequent; colitis is small-volume, frequent, urgent and mucus-coated, often with fresh red blood. Soluble fibre — psyllium at roughly 1/2 teaspoon per 10 kg, or plain pumpkin at 1 teaspoon per 5 kg — helped about 80% of dogs in a 37-dog study of chronic large-bowel diarrhea. See a veterinarian if signs last beyond 48 hours or include blood, vomiting or lethargy.
