For most households, Sustainably Yours wins this three-way plant-based cat litter comparison in Canada because its corn-and-cassava blend clumps hard enough for multi-cat boxes while tracking less than pure corn. World's Best suits single-cat homes wanting fast scooping; Naturally Fresh walnut litter wins on dust. Compare all three in our cat litter collection.
These three brands sit side by side on our shelves, and they get picked up by very different customers. Corn, cassava and walnut shell behave differently in a box ā in grain size, in how fast a clump cures, in how much dust hangs in the air when you pour. Below we break each one down by criterion rather than by brand, so you can match a litter to your actual box setup instead of to marketing copy. If you also want to upgrade the box itself, browse our cat supplies and litter box range while you're deciding.
What are these three litters actually made of?
World's Best Cat Litter is milled from whole-kernel corn. Sustainably Yours blends corn with cassava (tapioca) starch. Naturally Fresh uses crushed walnut shell left over from nut processing. All three are plant-based, biodegradable in principle, and heavier-clumping than most paper or wood pellet options.
The ingredient base drives almost everything else. Corn starch is a natural binder ā add moisture and it gels, which is why corn litters clump quickly. Cassava starch is an even stickier binder, so blending the two gives Sustainably Yours a firmer crust without needing a clay or synthetic additive. Walnut shell has far less starch; Naturally Fresh relies on the shell's dense, fibrous structure to absorb and trap, plus added binders in its clumping lines.
One thing worth saying plainly: litter is not a food, so it carries no guaranteed analysis panel and sits outside AAFCO standards. There's no legally defined "natural" or "low dust" claim for litter in Canada. That's exactly why testing in your own home matters more than the label ā and why a bag that works for your neighbour's single senior cat may fail in a three-cat household.
Interested in how plant fibre behaves generally? The high fiber content of corn and walnut hulls is what gives both materials their absorbency, but corn's smaller particle size means more surface area and faster wicking.
Which plant-based litter clumps hardest?
In our side-by-side scooping, Sustainably Yours produced the most intact clumps, holding together after a 15ā20 minute cure. World's Best clumps fastest ā often scoopable in under 10 minutes ā but its clumps are softer and can crumble at the edges. Naturally Fresh clumps well in its multi-cat formula and poorly in its pellet line, which isn't designed to clump at all.
Clump integrity matters for one practical reason: a clump that breaks apart leaves urine-soaked granules behind, and those granules are what turn into ammonia smell three weeks later. Our team at Ashario Pets recommends judging a litter by what's left in the box after scooping, not by how the clump feels in the scoop.
Diet changes the test, too. Cats eating mostly wet cat food take in roughly 70ā78% of their food as water, so they produce a larger volume of more dilute urine and noticeably bigger clumps. Cats on dry food with high protein content concentrate their urine, giving smaller, denser clumps that most litters handle easily. If you've recently switched a cat from kibble to canned, expect to scoop more mass per day ā that isn't the litter failing.
Depth is the variable most people get wrong
All three brands clump better at 7ā9 cm (about 3 inches) of depth. Below 5 cm, urine hits the box floor and spreads into a pancake that no plant litter will lift cleanly. Pet owners tell us they've written off a litter for "not clumping" when the real issue was a box filled to 3 cm.
Tracking and dust: corn vs walnut cat litter
Naturally Fresh walnut litter tracks the least of the three in our experience, because walnut granules are heavier per particle and less likely to lodge between toe pads. World's Best corn litter tracks the most ā light, small granules travel on paws and get flicked out during digging. Sustainably Yours falls in between.
Dust ranks the other way around on pour-in. Walnut shell produces a fine, dark dust that settles on light flooring and baseboards; corn and cassava pour cleaner but kick up more loose granules during use. There's a trade-off here that no brand escapes: lighter particles mean less visible dust and more tracking, heavier particles mean the reverse.
Three fixes we suggest constantly in store: a high-sided or top-entry box, a deep-pile litter mat at the exit, and keeping the box off carpet. When a customer comes in frustrated about granules in the hallway, we usually find the box is on a smooth floor with no mat ā the mat alone cuts visible tracking dramatically. Our cat grooming tools help too; trimming the fur between the toes of long-haired cats removes the single biggest tracking vector in a Persian or Maine Coon household.
If any cat in the house has asthma or chronic upper-airway signs, dust type is a medical question, not a preference. The American Veterinary Medical Association and your own vet are the right source for that call ā ask before switching.
Odour control across a full box cycle
Over a 30-day cycle with daily scooping, Sustainably Yours and Naturally Fresh held odour longest in our testing, typically 3ā4 weeks before a full dump was obvious. World's Best controlled odour well for roughly 2ā3 weeks in a single-cat box, shorter with two cats sharing.
Corn's starch binds ammonia reasonably well but saturates sooner. Walnut shell's porous structure keeps absorbing, which is why the Naturally Fresh Ultra Odour Control line is popular with multi-cat homes. Cassava adds a second absorbent layer to Sustainably Yours, and in our store we see two- and three-cat households gravitate to its 26 lb (11.8 kg) bag for exactly that reason.
No litter fixes a medical odour. A sudden, sharp change in urine smell, straining, or frequent tiny clumps can signal urinary tract disease, and the ASPCA flags litter box changes as an early warning sign worth a vet visit. Supportive products like high-moisture food and water fountains help with general urinary wellness ā see our cat health and wellness range ā but diagnosis belongs with your veterinarian.
How much litter do you actually use per month?
A single adult cat with daily scooping typically goes through 4.5ā7 kg of clumping plant litter per month. Two cats sharing two boxes run 9ā14 kg. Prices shift too often for us to quote, so we compare by bag count instead: one 26 lb (11.8 kg) bag per month for one cat, or roughly two per month for two cats.
Where the three brands differ is top-up rate. World's Best needs more frequent topping because softer clumps carry away extra granules with each scoop ā we've seen single-cat homes finish a 12 lb (5.4 kg) bag in about three weeks. Sustainably Yours and Naturally Fresh lose less volume per scoop, which stretches a bag closer to its label estimate.
Buying in the larger bag format is the single biggest lever on cost per month, and it's why litter runs are such a common Saturday errand. We're at 1111A Finch Ave W, Unit 2, North York, ON M3J 2P7, open 7 AM to 11 PM daily, and we deliver around the GTA via Instacart and other services. For heavy bags, the price match guarantee is worth checking before you commit to a case.
Honest fit warnings before you switch
Each of these litters has a household it genuinely doesn't suit. Matching the material to your cat's habits prevents the most common failure: a cat that refuses the new box and finds a bath mat instead.
Skip World's Best if you have hard floors running into carpet, a vigorous digger, or more than two cats sharing one box. The fine corn granules travel, and the softer clump structure means more frequent top-ups.
Skip Sustainably Yours if your cat has a documented corn sensitivity that extends to environmental contact, or if you need a pale litter for visual monitoring. It's also a denser bag to carry ā the 26 lb format is a real lift up a walk-up staircase.
Skip Naturally Fresh if your vet has asked you to watch for blood in the urine. Walnut litter is dark brown, and spotting pink-tinged clumps is genuinely difficult. Also skip the non-clumping pellet line if you scoop daily and want clumps.
Transition slowly regardless of which you choose. Mix 25% new litter into the old for three days, then 50%, then 75%. Research indexed on PubMed on feline litter substrate preference consistently shows cats choose familiar textures, and a 2024 behavioural review reinforced that abrupt substrate changes are a leading trigger for out-of-box elimination. Keep the old box available during the switch ā the "n+1 rule" (one box per cat plus one) gives them an out.

Questions we get asked at the litter shelf
Can you flush corn or cassava cat litter down a Toronto toilet?
Don't. Even though some corn litters are marketed as flushable, Toronto's wastewater guidance discourages flushing any litter, and public health agencies warn that cat faeces can carry Toxoplasma gondii, which municipal treatment isn't designed to eliminate. Bag clumps and put them in the garbage, or use the green bin where your municipality allows pet waste.
Does walnut litter stain light flooring?
Dry walnut granules don't stain, but damp ones can leave a faint brown mark on grout or unsealed grouted tile if ground underfoot. In our experience a weekly vacuum and a mat at the box exit prevents it entirely. Keeping the box off porous surfaces is the simplest insurance.
Is plant-based litter safe if my cat eats a few granules?
Small accidental ingestion of corn, cassava or walnut litter is generally low risk compared with clay litters, which swell considerably. That said, persistent litter eating can signal anaemia or a nutritional issue and warrants a vet appointment ā the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association is a good starting point for finding a clinic. Kittens under 12 weeks should be supervised with any clumping litter.

Key takeaway: Sustainably Yours delivers the firmest clumps and longest odour window, making it the safest pick for multi-cat households. Naturally Fresh walnut litter tracks the least and suits dust-sensitive homes, while World's Best corn litter is the quickest-clumping option for a single cat. Fill any of them to 7ā9 cm and transition over 7ā10 days.
